  • 2 – 5.3 oz packages garlic and fine herbs Boursin spread
  • 1 medium sweet onion
  • 6 to 8 strips thick bacon
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp fresh thyme
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 2 Tbsp balsamic vinegar
  • 2 Tbsp sugar
  • Salt and pepper to taste

ingredient information:

  • Boursin: There are several flavors to choose from for this soft, creamy cheese. Any flavor will work for this recipe, but we chose the garlic and fine herbs. You can use one, but we wanted to the dip to go a little farther and went with 2. For a party, you might want to buy it by the case.
  • Bacon: Thick cut apple wood smoked bacon is recommended for this recipe, though you can use any bacon that you have on hand. If using a thinner bacon, add a couple of extra strips to the recipe.
  • Onion: For this recipe, use a sweet onion for the best flavor combo. You want it to basically melt into the other ingredients.
  • Sugar: We used basic white sugar in this recipe, but you could also swap it out for some brown sugar or maple syrup in a 1:1 ratio if you prefer.

instructions:

Stick around to the end, and I’ll give you the recipe for the perfect pairing to this dip.

  1. Prepare the bacon onion jam by cutting up your bacon into small pieces. Add it to a hot pan and cook through. Don’t make it too crispy.
  2. Remove the bacon from the pan and discard some of the grease. Leave a coating of bacon grease in the pan for the next step.
  3. Dice the onion and add it to the pan. Cook on medium high until the onions are soft and translucent. Salt to taste.
  4. Add the bacon back to the pan, along with the garlic powder, onion powder, thyme and salt and pepper to taste.
  5. Add the balsamic vinegar and cook for another minute.
  6. Whisk in the Dijon mustard.
  7. Add the sugar for some extra sweetness.
  8. Cook down until all elements are incorporated.
  9. Spread the Boursin onto a plate or small platter and spoon the jam on top.

my recipe tips

  • Cooking bacon: Everyone likes their bacon cooked differently, but for this recipe crispy is better. Of course, you also don’t want to take it to extra crispy or it won’t absorb other flavors very well. Keep a close eye on it while cooking.
  • Using kitchen scissors: One of my favorite utensils in my kitchen are the scissors. When I was cutting the bacon I first reached for a knife, and it just wasn’t handling the texture very well. It was so much easier when I switched over to the scissors to cut the raw bacon into small pieces. If you don’t already have some, add this pair to your cooking arsenal today.
  • Cooking onions: Let me tell you a secret…I don’t like onions. But I love this dip that’s filled with them. The secret is cooking them down enough so that they take on the flavors of everything around them and just add that bit of sweetness. Don’t undercook your onions. They should be translucent and soft.
  • Sweetness level: It’s easy to get carried away with the sugar in this dish. I added a bit more than the recipe calls for and regretted it later because when it sits for a bit the sugar begins to harden. It was almost like bacon candy instead of jam after a bit. You’ll be alright if you stick to the 2 Tbsp.
  • Presentation: We used a small platter for plating this beautiful dip, but you can use a large plate or even a decorative pie dish instead.

🍽️ serving ideas

There are lots of things that you can dip into this delicious jammy dip, but our favorite is some toasted crusty garlic bread. I have the perfect recipe that you can check out HERE. You can also just use chunks of rustic bread, crackers, store made toasties, bagel chips pita or even tortilla chips. If you want a healthier version, use celery sticks or baby carrots.

If you’re having a get together with lots of appetizers, this dip recipe is great alongside sweet cannoli dip or this roasted tomato and burrata dip. Then there will be a little something for everyone.

recipe notes

  • Tips: Check out my recipe tips above to help you get the best results for this super yummy dip.
  • Storage: Keep leftovers (if you even have any) covered in plastic wrap or in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 to 4 days. I don’t recommend freezing this dip, as it may affect the texture.
  • Dip prep: I wouldn’t recommend making this dip very far ahead of serving time. The bacon onion jam really is best when served fresh and hot.
  • Reheat: Skip reheating when eating this dip the next day. It’s still quite yummy even when the bacon onion jam is cold.
