Dip:
- 2 lb ground beef
- 2 small sweet onion – thinly sliced
- 1 Tbsp butter
- 8 oz Sharp cheddar cheese
- ½ lb. American cheese
- 1 Tbsp onion powder
- 1 cup bacon crumbles
- ½ cup ketchup
- 1 can cream of cheddar soup
- Salt and pepper to taste
Sauce:
- ½ cup mayonnaise
- 2 Tbsp ketchup
- 2 Tbsp sweet relish
- 1 Tbsp Dijon mustard
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- ½ tsp onion powder
- ½ tsp chili powder
ingredient information:
- Ground beef: Use any percent beef that you like, just be sure to drain it before adding it to the recipe.
- Sweet onion: Sweet or Vidalia onions are the best choice for this recipe, but you can use whatever onions you have on hand. Shallots will also work for this recipe.
- Butter: You can swap the butter out for olive oil for cooking the onions.
- Cheddar cheese: We chose extra sharp cheese for this recipe. Feel free to use pre-shredded cheese, but for optimal flavor shred your own fresh.
- American cheese: This cheese has a gentle flavor and melts well. Swap it out for Velveeta, Monterrey Jack cheese or more Cheddar.
- Bacon crumbles: The best bacon is bacon that you cook yourself, but you can also use pre-packaged bacon crumbles to cut down on time and prep.
- Ketchup: In our family, the only real ketchup is Heinz, but we do not judge. Use whatever brand you like best.
- Cheddar cheese soup: We used a simple can of Campbell’s cheddar cheese soup for this dip. You could also swap it out for French onion soup.
- Sweet relish: If you’re not a fan of sweet pickles, feel free to swap this out for dill relish.
- Mayonnaise: Choose your favorite brand of mayo for this recipe. You can also swap it out for sour cream or Greek yogurt for a lighter flavor.
- Dijon mustard: Dijon gives this burger dip a little kick, but not too much. Feel free to swap it out for a spicier mustard of your choice.
instructions:
Stick around to the end, and I’ll tell you what to serve with this yummy dip.
- Cook the ground beef to a crumble and drain it. Place the cooked ground beef into the crockpot.
- Cube the cheeses and also place it in the crockpot.
- Add the ketchup, soup, onion powder and salt and pepper to taste.
- Cook 6 to 8 slices of bacon to crispy.
- Remove the bacon from the pan, add the sliced onions and butter and cook the onions until caramelized. Salt and pepper to taste.
- Add the bacon, crumbled, and cooked onions to the crockpot.
- Turn to low and cook 2 ½ to 3 hours, stirring occasionally throughout the cook time.
- Transfer the dip to a serving dish (optional).
- Whisk together all of the ingredients for the burger sauce and drizzle it on top.

my recipe tips
- Spice it up: If you like a little more heat in your smash burger, add some jalapeno peppers to the crockpot (amount to your liking). You can also spice up the sauce with a few splashes of hot sauce.
- Optional additions: This dip can be customized to your liking. Treat it like you would when you order a burger. If you like pickles, toss some in. Tomatoes? Add some canned or freshly diced to the mix. I would stir these items in after the cheese has melted and you’re ready to transfer it to a serving dish or just use them as a garnish.
- Make extra: When I made this I wished that I’d made a double batch of the sauce so that I had extra for later when I was reheating the leftovers (if you have leftovers…which is unlikely).

🍽️ serving ideas
There are lots of things that you can dip into this delicious smash burger dip, but our favorite is some simple tortilla chips. Other options would be sturdy chips, crostinis, corn chips or pretzel chips.
If you’re having a get together with lots of appetizers, this dip recipe is great alongside this waffle cone dip or this fried pickle dip. Then there will be a little something for everyone.
equipment you’ll need
If you don’t already have one at home, this is the perfect time to grab yourself a crockpot. Believe me, they’re a lifesaver. Ours is on a constant rotation for family meals and party favs. For this recipe, we used a 3 quart size like THIS ONE. In all honesty, if you’re making this for a party I would double the recipe and use a 6 to 8 quart crockpot instead, like THIS ONE or THIS ONE.

recipe notes
- Tips: Check out my recipe tips above to help you get the best results for this super yummy dip.
- Storage: Keep leftovers (if you even have any) covered in plastic wrap or in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 to 4 days. I don’t recommend freezing this dip, as it may affect the texture.
- Dip prep: You can can prepare all of the elements of this dip ahead of time, but wait until a couple of hours prior to serving to heat it all up in the crockpot. Save the garnishing with burger sauce until just before serving.
- Reheat: You can use the microwave, crockpot or oven to reheat this dip. If there is a lot of the dip left, my preference is to put it back in the crockpot for reheating. However, if eating just a serving, toss it in the microwave.
