  • 8oz package cream cheese-softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 cup white chocolate chips
  • ½ Tbsp coconut oil
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup cake treat pieces
  • 1/4 cup sprinkles

ingredient information:

  • Cream cheese: We prefer using Philadelphia brand cream cheese for this dip, though any brand will work. If you haven’t had a chance to leave it out to soften, just pop it in the microwave for about 20 to 30 seconds.
  • Powdered Sugar: This is not to be confused with white sugar. It’s very finely milled and combined with a small amount of an anti clumping agent so that it appears like snow. It melts into the cream cheese to form the perfect creamy base to take on other flavors.
  • White chocolate chips: You’ll find the white chocolate chips right beside the semi-sweet ones in your grocery store. You can also substitute with white chocolate wafers.
  • Heavy whipping cream: aka heavy cream is a rich, high-fat dairy product that makes the most delicate and delicious whipped cream with very little effort. If you don’t want to make homemade whipped cream, you can substitute it with Cool Whip.
  • Coconut oil: Just a small amount of coconut oil helps to make the white chocolate smooth and even glossy when it melts. You can substitute this in equal parts with vegetable shortening.
  • Cake treat pieces: To keep things simple, I just grabbed the first premade iced cakes I saw on the grocery shelf, and they worked great. However, feel free to make your own cake from scratch for this recipe if that’s up your alley. You can also use premade angel food cake.

instructions:

Stick around to the end, and I’ll show you some ways to turn this into other special dips too.

  1. Place the cup of white chocolate chips and coconut oil in a microwave safe bowl and microwave for 15-second intervals, mixing in between, until fully melted. Set aside to cool slightly.
  2. Pour heavy cream into a bowl and use an electric hand mixer to whip it into soft peaks. Set it aside.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine the cream cheese and powdered sugar with the hand mixer until smooth.
  4. Mix in vanilla and melted white chocolate.
  5. Fold in the whipped cream until well blended.
  6. Cut the prepared cake treats into ¼ cubes.
  7. Gently mix in the cake bites and sprinkles, leaving a few for garnish.
  8. Transfer the dip to a serving bowl and garnish with additional sprinkles, cake bits and seasonal candy.

my recipe tips

  • Take it easy: When mixing in the cake bits, don’t over mix. Just fold them in. The more you mix, the more you end up with little cake crumbs instead of pieces.
  • Customize it: We kept it simple and just used some sprinkles in our birthday cake dip, but you can also add other things like bits of candy, chocolate chips, mini marshmallows or whatever little sweet things you enjoy. Skip the raisins…no one wants that.
  • Making homemade whipped cream: Making homemade whipped cream is so simple if you follow these couple of tips. 1. Start with very cold cream. Also, cool down the bowl and beaters in the fresher for about 15 minutes prior to whipping. 2. Don’t overwork the cream. Once you see the heavy cream start to thicken, pay close attention. As soon as it reaches the right consistency, stop whipping.
  • Too far: When melting chocolate in the microwave, it’s super easy to take it too far. Just a few seconds can be the difference between smooth and easy to drizzle to hard and cakey. That’s why I encourage you to take it slow and put the chocolate in the microwave for just 10 to 15 seconds at a time, stirring in between each interval. Stop when you see that there are still a few soft lumps in the chocolate. Then just continue to stir until the chocolate is smooth. Those last few pieces will melt away with just a little mixing.

start with the right tools

The main kitchen tool that you’ll need to make this dip is a simple hand mixer. I think that we still have the one that we received as a wedding gift 30 years ago now. Those things last forever. However, if you’re looking to buy your first ever or just want an upgrade, check out THIS ONE or THIS ONE. They’re both reasonably priced, work great and add a little style to your dip making experience. Pair it with this set of mixing bowls that comes in a variety of colors.

do we have a preferred cream cheese brand?

Yes!!! I understand that this is a personal preference, but I always use Philadelphia cream cheese (even though Philly is our sports rival here in Pittsburgh). There’s just something about the taste. That being said, any cream cheese brand will work just fine. So, stick with your favorite brand when making this dip.

  • Storage: Keep leftovers (if you even have any) covered in plastic wrap or in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 to 4 days. I don’t recommend freezing this dip, as it may affect the texture.
  • Dip prep: You can prepare this dip ahead of time and keep it in the fridge until time to serve. Add some fresh sprinkles to the top at the time of serving.
