- 1 cup sour cream
- 1 cup mayo
- 2 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 2 to 3 medium sweet onions (diced)
- 2 Tbsp olive oil
- 1 Tbsp minced garlic
- 1 Tbsp Dijon mustard
- 1 cup beef broth
- Balsamic vinegar
- 1 Tbsp horseradish
- Salt and pepper to taste
ingredient information:
- Onion: For this recipe, use sweet onions, like Vidalia onions, for the best flavor combo. You want it to basically melt into the other ingredients.
- Sour cream: Our favorite brand of sour cream is Daisy for both the flavor and texture. You should use your favorite. This can also be swapped out for Greek yogurt.
- Mayonnaise: This is a staple in most US refrigerators and is great for adding a little creaminess to a dip. Choose your favorite brand.
- Balsamic vinegar: This vinegar has a deep and rich flavor, often used in dressings and marinades. When reduced, its sweetness comes out. It really heightens the flavor of this dip.
- Dijon mustard: Any brand of Dijon mustard will work for this recipe. You can also replace it with yellow or stone-ground mustard.
- Garlic: Fresh garlic is always best, but you can also use pre-minced garlic from a jar or even garlic paste if you don’t want to take the extra time for chopping.
- Horseradish: You can skip the horseradish. I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. But I definitely wouldn’t. It really elevates the flavor.
- Worcestershire sauce: This ingredient adds a depth and additional umami flavor to this dip.
- Beef broth: We used regular beef broth for this. You can also sub in reduced sodium or vegetable broth, though it will alter the flavor profile. You can also dissolve beef bouillon powder in water to create your own broth.
instructions:
Stick around to the end, and I’ll tell you how to toast your rye bread for serving.
- Dice the onions.
- Drizzle olive oil in a saute pan and place over medium high heat. Place the onions in the pan.
- Season with salt and cook the onions down until they are translucent.
- Add the garlic and cook for another minute.
- Splash some balsamic vinegar in the pan to coat the onions.
- Pour the beef broth in the pan and squeeze in the Dijon mustard. Whisk the ingredients together.
- Continue to cook the onions until the broth is fully reduced. Allow it to cool.
- In a bowl, place the sour cream, mayo, horseradish, Worcestershire sauce, and prepared onions.
- Mix thoroughly and salt to taste.
- For best results, place in the fridge overnight so that the flavors meld.

my recipe tips
- Diced or sliced: You’ll see that in the images, I sliced the onions instead of dicing. However, I remade this recipe a second time with diced onions and preferred that version. It does not affect the flavor either way. So, do what you prefer.
- How much to reduce?: When reducing the beef broth, you still want to see some liquid in the pan, but be sure that it’s not more than a tablespoon or two because it will thin out the dip too much.
- Additions: You can feel free to fancy up this dip with other ingredients. For example, add some bacon crumbles, shredded cheese of your choice, diced red peppers, or fresh herbs, like dill or parsley.

🍽️ serving ideas
There are lots of things that you can dip into this delicious French onion dip, but of course our favorite is potato chips. My personal favorite is simple thin potato chips, but you can go with rippled or kettle too. Other options are pretzels or pretzel chips, soft pretzel bits, our puff pastry dippers or corn chips.
If you’re having a get together with lots of appetizers, this dip recipe is great alongside this smash burger dip or this chocolate brownie dip. Then there will be a little something for everyone.
do we have a preferred brand of sour cream?
Yes! I’m a total sour cream snob. It’s one of my favorite foods. Seriously, I put that stuff on everything. Being a connoisseur of sour cream, I have strong opinions about taste and, particularly, texture. I rarely use a low fat sour cream because I feel that the texture tends to be more grainy. There are also certain brands that lack the smooth texture I’m looking for. My absolute favorite brand of cream cheese is Daisy. It’s worth paying a little extra and skipping generic brands for this crucial ingredient.

recipe notes
- Tips: Check out my recipe tips above to help you get the best results for this super yummy dip.
- Storage: Keep leftovers (if you even have any) covered in plastic wrap or in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 to 5 days. I don’t recommend freezing this dip, as it may affect the texture.
- Dip prep: You can and should prepare this dip ahead of time. The longer it’s in the fridge, the better it tastes.
